![]() ![]() The term reversible process refers to a process that takes place at such a slow rate that it is always at equilibrium and its direction can be changed (it can be “reversed”) by an infinitesimally small change is some condition. ![]() This new property was expressed as the ratio of the reversible heat ( q rev) and the kelvin temperature ( T). In a later review of Carnot’s findings, Rudolf Clausius introduced a new thermodynamic property that relates the spontaneous heat flow accompanying a process to the temperature at which the process takes place. In 1824, at the age of 28, Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot ( ) published the results of an extensive study regarding the efficiency of steam heat engines. Predict the sign of the entropy change for chemical and physical processes.Explain the relationship between entropy and the number of microstates. For the noble gases, this is a direct reflection of the principle that translational quantum states are more closely packed in heavier molecules, allowing them to be occupied.By the end of this section, you will be able to: It is apparent that entropies generally increase with molecular weight. Entropy, however, measures not energy itself, but its dispersal among the various quantum states available to accept it, and these exist even in pure elements. Scientists conventionally set the energies of formation of elements in their standard states to zero. ![]() This is the basis of an alternative (and more fundamental) definition of entropy: With more available microstates, the entropy of a system increases. In contrast to the macrostate, which characterizes plainly observable average quantities (temperature, for example), a microstate specifies all molecular details about the system, including the position and velocity of every molecule. For a given set of macroscopic variables, the entropy measures the degree to which the probability of the system is spread out over different possible microstates. The interpretation of entropy is the measure of uncertainty, which remains about a system after its observable macroscopic properties, such as temperature, pressure, and volume, have been taken into account. Thermodynamic entropy has the dimension of energy divided by temperature, which has a unit of joules per kelvin (J/K) in the International System of Units. As a result, entropy (denoted by S) is an expression of disorder or randomness. These processes reduce the state of order of the initial systems. It determines that thermal energy always flows spontaneously from regions of higher temperature to regions of lower temperature, in the form of heat. Therefore, entropy is also a measure of the tendency of a process, such as a chemical reaction, to be entropically favored or to proceed in a particular direction. In classical thermodynamics, the second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system always increases or remains constant.

![]() "They'll ask me things like, 'Hey, if you're forcing this door open, how would you do it?'" But when comparing on-screen drama to real life, Ferraris could only say, "our job, fighting fires, is stranger than fiction." I'm getting better." The executives at Wolf Entertainment certainly feel that Ferraris plays a pivotal role in all three Chicago-centric shows, writing in the same feature, "He brings decades of frontline experience to the 'One Chicago' franchise, and after eight seasons of being part of our 'Chicago Fire' family, we couldn't imagine the Firehouse 51 squad without him."įerraris recalled that the showrunners would turn to him for specific details regarding the action or equipment required to portray a real-life event a particular scene accurately. I work with some incredible people, and to see them turn it on and off is pretty impressive. Commenting on his total lack of experience as a performer, he added, "I didn't know what to do, but everybody just told me to do what I normally do on the incidents and things like that." As for whether he finds acting or firefighting more challenging, there seems to be no contest. "I had never wanted to act, so the big thing for me was just trying to get comfortable around a bunch of people," he said. "I was never an actor," he said in an online feature for the show's production company, Wolf Entertainment. ![]() "And then Derek Haas, our 'Chicago Fire' showrunner, approached me around episode five or six and asked me to read for him, and then they started writing me in." Many episodes and seasons later, Ferraris continues to be written in as a low-key but vital part of the "Chicago Fire" first responder team. I said sure, and that's pretty much how it all went down." Ferraris described working on several episodes in a non-speaking capacity before he was tabbed to do more in the show. "Steve Chikerotis, the show's technical advisor, who I've known for years, asked me if I would drive. "On the first day of filming, the crew realized nobody in the cast was able to drive squad," Ferraris said, referencing the station vehicle that needed someone at the wheel for one of the series' initial scenes to begin filming. But as Ferraris notes in the same interview, it turns out his actual professional experience would become positively indispensable to the show before shooting even began. So, for the many dedicated Ferraris buffs out there, here's a deep-dive into some of the intriguing, untold truths about this low-key but high-impact real-world hero.Īs his many recurring appearances on the show make clear, the producers definitely liked what they saw. ![]() That's because Ferraris is not only a hard-working on-screen first responder hauling hose, driving the squad truck, or executing high-risk, fictional rescues on "Chicago Fire" - he's also a Chi-town firefighter in real life. But one of those non-actors, Chicago native Tony Ferraris, has earned a place in fans' hearts to rival any of the higher-luminosity stars in the "Chicago Fire" lineup. In that regard, a big part of what makes the series ring true with fans can be attributed to the deceptively simple fact that some of the minor and background actors on the show are, in reality, not actors at all. It's that indefinable sense that "Chicago Fire" takes place in a real-life city with genuine characters facing authentic challenges. All that being said, there's a factor beyond the obvious talent and charisma of the show's stars that keeps viewers tuning in every Wednesday night. ![]() ![]() ![]() Red tape strangles engineers in many firms. The result is a Finder addition rather than a replacement – Finder has a file picker in Open and Save As dialog boxes Command One does not. Why? Ah, because the spacebar is used to arbitrarily select files for a mass operation.īells and whistles - Basically, Commander One is a graphic user interface on the Unix commands that the real pros use in favour of the Finder. The binoculars icon for search … why not just a magnifying glass with is normal for almost everything else? And QuickLook doesn’t work with the spacebar-tap to launch full-resolution file previews: you have to actually click the QuickLook icon. Of course, you can do this in Finder but you have to have two folders open, or open in tabs in one window, or drag-and-drop from one onto another and wait for that somewhat off-putting springload feature to open that, and then perhaps several others in turn, which can be tedious, not to mention confusing when you let go at the wrong instant.īuttons along the top could do with a little work. The most obvious use is simply copying files from one hard drive/thumb drive/whatever to another pane-to-pane. The paid upgrade to Pro adds power user features including a process viewer with one-button access (sure, every Mac can do this via Activity Monitor, which is already in your Utilities folder in Applications), archive compression and extraction, a built-in FTP manager, and direct access to Dropbox accounts, MTP, or even iOS devices (if they’re connected by cable). The free version works with local and network drives and supports search, preview and the ability to rename files during copy and move, which you cannot do with Finder. So, what is it? Commander One has a main window is split into side-by-side panes that can be used to act upon files and folders in multiple locations at once. Now I understand! Commander One is an attempt to bring that dual pane file management to Mac users, and it adds many power-user features while it does so.Įltima Software is a German development company that specialised in Windows apps to enable sharing of devices, over various types of networks (Ethernet, USB …) but I guess the company is seeing the writing on the wall (ever increasing numbers of switchers) to the point that it has had developers schooled in Apple’s new developer language Swift: that was used entirely to code Commander One.Īnd already Eltima’s product listing of Mac apps is impressive: SyncMate, Elmedia Player (which is a more fully featured QuickTime-like player that even lsts you download YouTube clips), Folx, PhotoBulk, Airy, Swordbox, SyncMate 4, Recover PDF Password, USB Network Gate, Typeeto, Flexihub, Unclouder, Flash Decompiler Trillix, Flash Optimizer and of course Commander One. ![]() Therefore, in some ways I was not well qualified to talk about Commander One, since I didn’t really know what ‘dual-pane file managers’ were and why Windows users like them so much. The use of the word "theatre" to mean a "building where plays are shown" dates from the 1570s in the English language. The etymology of the term "movie theater" involves the term "movie", which is a "shortened form of moving picture in the cinematographic sense" that was first used in 1896 and "theater", which originated in the ".late 14c., open air place in ancient times for viewing spectacles and plays". A screening room is a small theater, often a private one, such as for the use of those involved in the production of motion pictures or in a large private residence.
