Located on the roof at the top of the Arts Council stairway, three large patio pots were overflowing with lavender azaleas, pink bleeding hearts, blue columbine and spring foliage. The Roof Top Garden created by Laura Tonar and Cindy Behringer earned the Appreciation Award. Holden also won the Finest Design Award in the Youth Division. The fresh flower design featured spring green spider mums, bright yellow lilies, branches and fern. The Youth Award Katherine Cheff Challenge Trophy for finest design was awarded to Tommy Holden, a high school student, from the Boys and Girls Club. Hines also won the Finest Horticultural Award in the Youth Division. The Youth Award Joan Gamble Long Trophy for finest horticultural exhibit was awarded to Alize Hines, an early elementary student from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Holland. Monthly projects, including potato turkeys and pine cone birdfeeders, created by members and completed by seniors and children with special needs served by the Garden Therapy program were featured in this exhibit. The Robert and Linda Washburn Trophy for Outstanding Educational Exhibit was awarded to Holland Garden Club Garden Therapy for the Garden Therapy display. Sweepstakes awards are given to the designers who have won the most first place ribbons. Maes also won two National Awards: Tricolor and Petite Award, and local show trophies Lynne Frey Trophy, Jeanne Poll Trophy and Ruth Walsh Everett Trophy. Her design, “The Red Shoes,” illustrated a children’s fairy tale. In the Design Division, the Barbara Padnos Sweepstakes Trophy and Holland Garden Club Sweepstakes Award were awarded to Joan Maes. Nykamp also won several awards in horticulture and in design. Her pansy orchid plant called raspberry ice won the Award of Merit for Flowering Plants. In the Horticulture Division, Judy Nykamp won the Holland Garden Club Sweepstakes Trophy. Nationally accredited flower show judges made decided the winners in the following categories: Nature’s Reading Room, It’s A Small World, Dining in the Garden, Historic Gardens and Recommended Reading. “Reading in the Garden” was the theme of this years’ show.
